Safety and Security

The OMHM has launched a range of initiatives to improve tenant safety and security.

Tenants must also play a role in this process, through safe and respectful behaviour.

Public Housing

Safety and Security Initiatives

Some of the OMHM's initiatives over the past few years to ensure tenant safety include:

  • Creation of a safety and security coordination centre.
  • Closely monitored evacuation exercises.
  • Training of tenant safety officers in towers with 40 or more dwellings.
  • Enhanced building access controls.
  • Installation of closed circuit TVs in different OMHM sites and buildings.
  • Creation of patrol squads.
  • Addition of a 24/7 security hotlines at 514-872-OMHM (6646).
  • Improved intercom service.
  • Addition of street lights.
  • Visits to tenants age 80 or older.
  • Creating of a Neighbourhood Watch guide and support for tenant neighbourhood watch groups.

Tenant Involvement

Tenant involvement is crucial to the success of security measures. The following actions will improve eveyone's safety in public housing:

  • Building doors must not be blocked.
  • Tenants must make sure that their smoke detectors are working.
  • Tenants must participate in evacuation execises. A simple exercise . . . for life!
  • The use of outdoor stoves and barbecues on balconies or private terraces is prohibited.
  • No flammable or explosive materials may be kept in the apartment, in an outbuilding, in a storage area or common space.
  • Tenants must clear snow from their balconies and passageways and permit free access at all times. No objects that could let a young child climb may be left on a balcony.
  • Furniture, toys and objects must never be left beneath a window (particularly if open), that could allow a young child to child and possibly to fall.
  • Never block an exterior door of the building (by blocking it with a piece of wood for example).
  • The door to the apartment must be closed at all times.

Three Good Tips

  • Don't let strangers into the building.
  • Always lock your apartment door, even if you will only be out for a few minutes.
  • Make sure that strangers identify themselves before opening the door.

Peace of Mind . . . on the Line!
