Offering an Apartment

The OMHM signs agreements with landlords under the Rent Supplement Program (PSL) to make private apartments available to its tenants. The OMHM then offers such accommodations to households on the waiting list for a social housing unit.

Except for the OMHM's monthly grant payment to the landlord, relations between the landlord and tenants are subject to the customary legal provisions for rental housing.

The landlord is primarily responsible for providing the accommodation, keeping it habitable and giving the program tenant the same rights and privileges as other tenants.

Benefits for Landlords Offering Units to the OMHM

  • An agreement with the OMHM guarantees that the units reserved will be rented.
  • The OMHM tenant selection process eliminates the issues involved in trying to rent a vacant unit.
  • The OMHM's monthly payment of an important share of the rent minimizes loss of revenue.

Unit Selection Criteria

Units selected by the OMHM for participation in the Rent Supplement Program must meet the following criteria:

  • They are located on the Island of Montréal.
  • They are not above a garage or shop.
  • The rent must not exceed the maximum rent (the media rent for the Montréal Metropolitan Region).
  • The number of program units must not exceed 25% of the building's total number of units.
  • The apartment should have one, two or three enclosed bedrooms (or more), as well as a balcony.
  • Ideally, it must not be in a basement or a semi-basement.
