Changing Your Social Housing Unit
Applications Are Considered According to Three Priorities:
- Top priority goes to moves due to disasters or technical problems that make the current apartment temporarily uninhabitable.
- Consideration is then gives to requests associated with major tenant health or safety issues. This might included, for example, a move that would permit a significant improvement in living conditions to a resident with reduced autonomy.
- Third on the list are changes in the type or category of unit. Most requests fall into this group and pertain to the fact that an apartment is now too large or too small for the tenant's needs. A tenant who is 60 or older living in a family building, although eligible for a seniors' residence, also falls into this group.
How to Apply for a Change of Unit
Tenants who wish to apply for a change of unit should start by ensuring that their requests corresponds with one of the three foregoing priorities. Such tenants must also be in good standing with the OMHM and in compliance with all lease clauses. These tenants can launch the process by making a written request to the rental agent.
A screening committee reviews completed applications once they have been received by the rental agent. If the application is accepted, the tenant's name is placed on a waiting list. The wait will vary depending on the circumstances.
The OMHM may also initiate a change in housing if the the unit's type of category is different from that to which the household is entitled.
