Are You Eligible?

Low-rental housing (HLM) units are intended for individuals and families who cannot otherwise afford appropriate housing.

Other types of OMHM housing units are designed for families, individuals and seniors with low or moderate incomes.

Families, couples and individuals

Families, couples and individuals are eligible for a low rental (HLM) unit if all of the following conditions are met:

  • The applicant is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • You have lived in the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) for 12 months in the 24 months preceding your application.
  • The assets of all persons listed on the application are worth no more than $50,000.
  • You are capable are providing for your own basic needs and those of your household, or you have provided proof that you are receiving assistance that will ensure such autonomy.
  • The combined gross income of all those listed on the application is no more than:
    • Individual: $27,000
    • Couple: $27,000
    • 2 (people who are not living as a couple) or 3 people: $31,500
    • 4 or 5 people: $36,500
    • 6 people or more : $47,500
  • You have filed an application with the OMHM.

 

Ineligible Persons:

  • Full-time students with no dependent children.

  • Former HLM tenants whose lease was cancelled for eviction, nonpayment of a debt to the landlord or as a result of a judgement by the Régie du logement, within five years of their departure from the HLM and until the date is paid. 

Please note that the Government of Québec defines eligibility criteria in the By-law respecting the allocation of dwellings in low-rental housing (R.S.Q., c. S-8, r. 1) and are subject to change.

Seniors

Individuals who are 60 or older can ask to live in an HLM for seniors or in a retirement home with services.

Please note that parents who are 60 or older with a dependent child under the age of 18 are considered to be a family and can apply for a family unit.

Eligibility Criteria for a Seniors' Low-Rental (HLM) Unit

  • Be 60 or older.

  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

  • You have lived in the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) for 12  months in the 24 months preceding your application.

  • The assets of all people listed on the application are worth no more than $50,000.

  • The applicant can take care of his/her own basic needs or those of his/her family or has provided proof that s/he is receiving guaranteed assistance to that effect.

  • The combined gross income of all those listed on the application is no more than: 

    • Individual: $27,000
    • Couple: $27,000
    • 2 adults (not a couple) or 3: $31 500

  • You have filed an application with the OMHM.
